When I first started training with Michael at Progressive Fitness, I was overweight, out of shape, stuck in a rut I didn’t know how to get out of, and stubbornly resistant to the idea of going to a gym. By walking in the door that very first day, I tentatively placed myself out of my comfort zone and into the hands of a stranger. I was ready to make changes, but I needed help.Michael is wonderful to work with. He is professional, knowledgeable, always expanding that knowledge, and an excellent coach. He is always ready to encourage, correct form, and give that little extra push to help you through a challenging task. Michael is adept at reading people and is able to adapt the plan to work around injuries and limitations. I believe that Michael has my best interests at heart, and I have complete trust in his abilities. There once was a time when I could never have imagined having a personal trainer. Now I cannot imagine not working with Michael!After 9 months of training, I have lost 30 pounds and 23 inches. My body fat percentage dropped from 30 to 17. I am leaner, healthier, and I have much more energy. Although I have gotten smaller, I have gained strength and will be competing in my first power-lifting competition. Because of my training I was able to knock 6 minutes off of my personal best 10K run time. So many people have complimented me on how well I am doing and how great I am looking. The best compliments…I look 20 years younger and my face radiates happiness and confidence! The weight loss is fantastic, but I am most excited by the changes to my lifestyle and attitude. Going to a training session at Progressive Fitness really is one of the best parts of my day!”

Michael is not a trainer (that’s what you get for your dog!). Michael is a health and wellness coach! The skills and information I have gathered from my time with Michael are valuable lifelong tools I will have for a healthier lifestyle.

I came to Progressive Fitness after meeting Michael socially. I was having some recurrent back pain from work and I felt my overall fitness level (or lack there of) was a contributing factor. I wanted to “get in shape” for work and for myself, but I didn’t know where to start, how to go about it and I knew I would need some help to stay motivated. I was tired of not being able to do things I wanted to and the things I know I should be able to do! I was finally ready for a lifestyle change that involved “getting fit”. I had started to make those changes but the results were slow. I don’t fix my own car, I take it to a professional. I thought why should fixing me be any different. I recognized I needed help.

When Michael and I started talking I recognized that his approach/ philosophies about health and wellness were the right fit for me. He recognized that I wasn’t after the beach body physique, and he tailored his advice to who I was and my needs. The best thing is that while not focusing on that part of my fitness, I am getting the esthetic results as well! He made the gym less intimidating and educated me on proper technique and form. I don’t have a lot of time to be at the gym so his expertise has helped me get the most out of my time in the gym. He helped me understand that overall strength can improve performance in specific areas of my life, be it work or sports.

The real key to my success, however, is the work and advice he has given me on nutrition. It has been the key that has unlocked my greatest success in regaining a level of fitness I am comfortable with. He helped me change my dietary habits to get the results I wanted. I eat healthier and feel better, but it works within my comfort zone and with my needs, wants and desires. It works because he helps me understand why it works. Now I own the solution!

My time with Mike is nothing like any gym experience I have had before. I don’t dread my time at the gym or my time with him. It doesn’t feel like punishment or a hardship. I’ve seen results. It’s rewarding and encouraging. It’s an escape and a welcome release from the stresses of my day. These are the things that keep me coming back, and I have Michael to thank for that!

I began going to Progressive Fitness in the fall of 2009 as I had lost interest in going to a regular gym and wanted a change. On July 23rd of 2010 while training for a fall Marathon I somehow injured myself after completing a 26km training run. Although this injury subsequently sidelined me from running I still chose to attend Michael’s classes and he modified my workouts to avoid aggravation of my injury. I had already registered for the Emperor’s Challenge ½ marathon in August, the Melissa’s ½ marathon in September and the Okanagan full marathon in October. I chose not to run the Emperor’s in August, but by September even though I had not recovered from my injury I thought well I can’t run that ½ marathon but maybe the 10km? So I did. (by the way there is a small hill…like our Pederson hill) October came around and again I thought (still not out running yet) well….I can’t do the full marathon, but how about the 10km? I ran my fastest race time for a 10km J. With absolutely no running Michael’s KettleBell class maintained my strength to go uphill and my cardio to complete these events.( I do the John Stanton 10:1 method of running) P.S. It is April 2011 and I am still going to Progressive Fitness. Thanks Michael.
